Jackets Get Stralman From Calgary For Draft Pick

The Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Anton Stralman from the Flames in exchange for a third round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft, GM Scott Howson announced today. Stralman, 23, registered one goal and 12 assists for 13 points and 20 penalty minutes in 38 games with the Maple Leafs last season. Acquired by the Flames with Colin Stewart and Toronto?s seventh round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft for Wayne Primeau and Calgary?s second round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft on July 27, 2009, Stralman has collected 4-18-22 and 38 penalty minutes in 88 career NHL games.

Ducks Trade McCarthy To Thrashers

The Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League club has traded defenseman Steve McCarthy to the Thrashers for future considerations. McCarthy, 28, appeared in two preseason contests with Anaheim, collecting an assist with seven penalty minutes. He has appeared in 302 career NHL regular season games, recording 55 points with 168 PIM. McCarthy played last season in the Kontinental Hockey League, going scoreless with 16 PIM in 18 games with Ufa Salavat Yulayev. A native of Trail, British Columbia, McCarthy last appeared in the NHL with Atlanta in 2007-08, collecting 7 points with 48 PIM in 55 games. Originally selected by Chicago in the first round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. McCarthy was signed by Anaheim to a one-year contract on July 10, 2009.

Maple Leafs Obtain Kessel

Brian Burke, president and GM of the Maple Leafs, announced Friday evening that the team has obtained the rights to restricted free agent forward Phil Kessel from the Bruins. In exchange, Boston will receive the Maple Leafs? first-round draft picks in 2010 and 2011 and their second-round draft pick in 2010. Kessel and the Maple Leafs agreed to terms on a multi-year deal following the trade. Last season, Kessel, 21, was tied for 12th in NHL goal scoring with a career-high 36 goals and was tied with four others for the second-longest streak for consecutive games with a goal (six games). Kessel is currently rehabbing from June shoulder surgery and is not expected to join the Maple Leafs? lineup until mid-November.

Leafs, Blackhawks Exchange Picks

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Sunday that the hockey club has made a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Leafs have reacquired their own 2010 second round draft pick from Chicago (previously acquired from the Montreal Canadiens) in exchange for a second round draft pick in 2011 and Toronto?s third round draft pick in 2011. The Leafs previously acquired the 2011 second round draft pick along with Wayne Primeau from the Calgary Flames on July 27 in exchange for Anton Stralman, Colin Stuart and Toronto?s 2012 seventh round draft pick.

Ducks Acquire LW Weller From Senators

The Ducks announced Friday that they have acquired left wing Shawn Weller from Ottawa in exchange for right wing Jason Bailey. Weller, 23, played for the Binghamton Senators last season, Ottawa's primary affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). He appeared in a career-high 70 contests, collecting 4-5=9 points with 57 penalty minutes (PIM). Originally selected by Ottawa in the third round (77th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Weller has appeared in 134 career AHL contests, recording 12-13=25 points with 101 PIM.
